The all-new BMW M135 xDrive has arrived, bringing with it a host of upgrades and advanced features. From its powerful turbocharged engine to cutting-edge technology, this model has everyone talking. Despite some mixed opinions about its overall look, the M135 xDrive delivers impressive power, tech, and a design that sparks conversation.
Engine and Powertrain
The BMW M135 xDrive is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder M TwinPower turbocharged engine, delivering an impressive 300 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, resulting in 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds.
The previous BMW M135i, launched in 2018, was equipped with a similar 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produced 306 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, enabling a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.8 seconds. While the power output remains comparable, the new model benefits from several performance enhancements.
The updated 7-speed Steptronic transmission in the new M135 xDrive has been refined for smoother and faster gear shifts, improving overall acceleration and responsiveness. The new model also features a lighter chassis, contributing to slightly improved weight distribution and handling dynamics.
Handling and Performance
The BMW M135 xDrive is designed with precision and performance in mind. The M Sport adaptive chassis is central to its dynamic capabilities. This system uses electronically controlled dampers that adjust to road conditions and driving style. The adaptive dampers can stiffen for enhanced control during spirited driving or soften to absorb road imperfections for a more comfortable ride.
BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system is integrated with the car’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The xDrive system actively monitors wheel speed, steering angle, and lateral acceleration to optimise torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The system can send up to 100% of the power to either axle as needed.
The vehicle’s low centre of gravity, achieved through careful weight distribution and a lower chassis design, enhances its stability. The front strut and rear multi-link suspension setup is tuned for precision handling. The suspension components are made from lightweight aluminium to reduce unsprung weight, improving responsiveness and ride quality.
The variable sport steering system in the M135 xDrive adjusts the steering ratio based on the car’s speed. At lower speeds, it provides a lighter, more manoeuvrable feel, while at higher speeds, it offers tighter, more responsive feedback for better control.
The braking system features M Sport brakes with larger, ventilated discs and high-performance brake pads. This setup ensures excellent stopping power and fade resistance.
Furthermore, the car is equipped with an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) that improves traction and handling by distributing power more effectively across the rear wheels. This system enhances cornering performance by reducing understeer and providing more balanced handling dynamics.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the BMW M135 xDrive is equipped with the latest BMW iDrive system, featuring Operating System 9 and QuickSelect. This setup provides an intuitive and interactive user experience, allowing drivers to easily navigate through various functions and settings. Operating System 9 offers a more streamlined interface with faster response times, while QuickSelect allows drivers to access frequently used functions with a single touch, reducing distractions. Key interior features include:
- Sport seats designed for comfort and support during spirited driving.
- An M Sport steering wheel with paddle shifters for manual gear changes.
- Fully digital displays comprising a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display.
The interior is spacious and luxurious, with high-quality materials used throughout. Rear seats can be folded to expand the cargo space from 380 litres to 1,200 litres, adding practicality to its sporty nature.
Tech and Extras
The BMW M135 xDrive is packed with cutting-edge technology that enhances every aspect of the driving experience. Here are some of the standout features that are sure to impress tech enthusiasts.
The head-up display projects key driving information directly onto the windshield, including speed, navigation directions, and other critical data.
For audiophiles, the M135 xDrive offers an optional Harman Kardon surround sound system delivering exceptional sound quality, with rich bass, clear mids, and crisp highs. Meanwhile, the customisable ambient lighting system in the M135 xDrive allows drivers to personalise the cabin atmosphere with a range of colours.
Safety and Driver Assistance
BMW has integrated a range of advanced safety and driver assistance systems into the M135 xDrive. The Driving Assistant package includes features such as front collision warning, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. Additionally, the Parking Assistant system comes with a reversing assistant and automated parking capabilities. Optional features include Steering and Lane Control Assist, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, and Parking Assistant Professional, which allows for parking control via smartphone.
Aesthetics
The front end of the BMW M135 xDrive is certainly more refined, boasting an overall sleeker appearance. It sits lower to the road, a design choice BMW claims enhances its sporty character. The new LED headlights feature striking vertical elements and can be equipped with optional blue accents, adding an extra touch of character.
Despite our appreciation for the sleek design, we spent considerable time analysing the front end to pinpoint what felt off about it. The bonnet lid, which cuts off shorter than usual, gives it a unique look reminiscent of some Kia hatchbacks—an aspect that might appeal to some, while others may not be as fond.
In contrast, the rear of the M135 xDrive retains the aggressive styling we’re accustomed to. The wide rear lights, black diffuser-style insert, and quad exhausts all contribute to an assertive rear-end appearance, balancing the vehicle’s overall design.
Pricing
The BMW M135 xDrive is available for order at BMW retailers across the UK, with a starting RRP of £41,000
