More Than Just Power: Comprehensive Upgrades
Enhanced Engine Capabilities
At the core of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon and Touring models lies the significantly enhanced 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine. With an increase to 530 horsepower, up from the previous 510 hp, the new engine configuration not only promises but delivers substantial power. This upgrade is achieved through optimised tuning of the digital engine control unit (DME), allowing for a more ferocious and sustained power delivery.
Acceleration and Speed
This increase in power significantly affects the cars’ acceleration capabilities. The M3 Competition Saloon now sprints from 0 to 62 mph in an astonishing 3.5 seconds, with the Touring version just a fraction behind at 3.6 seconds. The top speed for both models is electronically limited to 155 mph, which can be increased up to 180 mph for the Saloon and 174 mph for the Touring with the optional M Driver’s Package.
Drivetrain and Transmission
The power from the M3’s upgraded engine is adeptly managed by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission equipped with Drivelogic. This transmission not only enhances the dynamic driving experience but also provides seamless power delivery, ensuring that drivers can fully exploit the increased horsepower and torque. Additionally, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system offers enhanced traction, giving the M3 Competition a more secure and responsive handling. Switching off DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) bring 2WD into play, delivering all of the power to the rear wheels.
Chassis and Handling
The M3 models are renowned for their agility and precise handling, and the latest Competition variants continue this legacy. The integration of M-specific suspension settings allows for an even sharper driving experience. These settings help manage the car’s increased power output, ensuring that the enhanced performance translates into straight-line speed and cornering prowess. The cars’ suspension systems are designed to handle the extra demands of track driving, providing a balance between dynamic handling and comfort during everyday driving.
Aesthetic and Functional Enhancements
Exterior Design Upgrades
The new M3 models feature a visually striking set of LED headlights with arrow-shaped daytime running lights that enhance their aggressive stance. These are part of a broader set of updates that include new stunning Jetblack forged light-alloy wheels as standard, with an option for newly designed silver M light-alloy wheels, adding a touch of elegance to the robust M3 frame.
Interior Refinements
The new three-spoke M steering wheel with multifunction buttons and a controversial red 12 o’clock marker that some will love, and others, not so much. The interior trim elements in the instrument and control panel come in Aluminium Rhobmicle Anthracite, or an optional M Carbon Fibre. M Carbon bucket seats are an optional extra. Meanwhile the use of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) surrounding the seat add an additional weight saving of 9.6kilograms compared to the standard M sport seats.
Advanced Technology and Packages
BMW Operating System 8.5 and Connectivity
Delving deeper into the technology, BMW’s Operating System 8.5 powers an upgraded infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is designed to be more intuitive, with a customisable interface that responds to touch and voice commands.
M Carbon and M Race Track Packages
For those looking for even more exclusivity and performance, the M Carbon exterior package offers enhancements like carbon fibre mirror caps and a new rear diffuser. The M Race Track package includes ceramic brakes and carbon bucket seats significantly reducing weight by 25 kg.
