Volkswagen is set to unveil the new Golf GTI Clubsport, claiming the title of the most powerful front-wheel drive Golf to date, during a world premiere at the Nürburgring 24 Hours race. This event is not just a race; it’s a celebration of the Golf’s 50th anniversary, making it a landmark occasion for fans and enthusiasts alike.

The GTI Clubsport features a bold redesign, especially at the front with its powerful new look and illuminated Volkswagen logo. Notably, it sports enhanced LED Plus headlights and a large rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics. The car rides on new 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels with a design inspired by the classic Detroit wheels from the fifth-generation Golf GTI. For those seeking performance enhancements, there’s an option for 19-inch Warmenau forged wheels, which reduce weight and optimise performance.
Inside, the Clubsport’s cockpit is outfitted with a new multifunction leather sports steering wheel and an advanced infotainment system designed to keep the driver focused on the road. Eco-Friendly Racing with the GTI Clubsport 24h
Volkswagen is also pushing the envelope in sustainable racing by entering the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h in the race, powered by a new E20 bioethanol fuel. This fuel, developed in collaboration with Shell, reduces CO2 emissions significantly thanks to its high renewable content. This race version of the GTI develops a hefty 348 PS and uses its power efficiently with a software-adapted engine capable of handling this advanced fuel.
3 Classic GTIs Join the Race
Amidst modern innovations, the race also pays homage to heritage, coinciding with the 45th anniversary of KWL Motorsport and the 50th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf. Three legendary Golf GTIs from the KWL Motorsport team will be competing, each representing a significant piece of automotive history:
- 1981 Golf GTI 16S Oettinger (Group 4): This model is renowned for its robust performance, equipped with an engine that delivers 208 PS. Its participation reflects the enduring legacy and continuous enthusiast appeal of the Golf GTI line.
- 1978 Golf GTI Kamei (Group 2): Known for its distinctive style and performance enhancements, this car delivers 183 PS. It exemplifies the innovative spirit that has characterised the GTI series throughout its history.
- 1980 Golf GTI (Group 2): This version, adorned with a GTI camouflage design and celebrating ’50 years of Golf,’ delivers 184 PS. It perfectly symbolises the blend of tradition and evolution that the Golf GTI represents.
